15 Pros and Cons of Living in Colorado in 2023

Colorado is one of the most stunning states in the United States and one of the desirable hotspots for people in the last few years. So, let me walk you through the pros and cons of living in Colorado and help you to make a wise decision.

I moved to Colorado for the first time in 2018, when I quit my job in Mexico. I had very little money saved up and no job prospects, but John, my friend, stayed here (he was born here) and he helped me to settle in. 

With years passing I have discovered this place, and have realized that everything that shines is not gold and so with Colorado. There are also a few not-so-good things about Colorado. I’m not complaining, the combination of job opportunities with a culture of wellness this “Centennial State” has given me a lot. Also, know why Colorado is famous and well-known among people!

Relocating to Colorado: Think Twice

There are several advantages and disadvantages of living in Colorado but before moving to Colorado ask yourself why to move to Colorado. There are many reasons to live in Colorado but everyone’s reason is different. What are your reasons? 

Where do you want to live in Colorado? Do you prefer staying in downtown Denver, Colorado Spring? If you don’t want to get robbed then you can choose the Front Range which is one of the affordable cities to live in Colorado.  There are other places like Ft. Collins, and Boulder where you can choose to settle down. Therefore, decide before you move to Colorado.

If you’re moving to Colorado for a better job, or mountains or a simple lifestyle then before anything make a simple own checklist. When I moved to Colorado, my list looked like this –

Pros And Cons of Living in Colorado: Perks of Living in Colorado

Why should you live in Colorado? We all desire better living and according to the World Population Review, the state shows a growth rate of 1.85 percent in 2010. As per World Population Review, Colorado ranks 11th on the list of U.S. cities. 

So, here are the advantages of living in Colorado. 

1. Great public education:

In 2012-2013, 50% of students of fourth grade scored above proficient on the NAEP math test. The school starts from grade K – grade 12. The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) sits at the top who controls the school districts that independently manage the public school system in Colorado.  

The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) is the administrative arm of the Colorado State Board of Education. The Commissioner of Education is the head of the CDE who is appointed by the State Board of Education. The state has ranked on performance in higher education as well as primary and secondary education and pre-K education. 

Colorado is home to Colorado State University, Metropolitan State University of Denver, Community College of Denver, University of Colorado, and the University of Denver. Some best elementary and intermediate education institutions are Challenge School, Vanguard School Elementary, and a lot more. 

2. Colorado job market and economy: 

Is Colorado a good place to work? Yes, Colorado, a hub of major corporations like Kaiser Permanente, Century Link, and Lockheed Martin. The population also enjoys federal facilities in the state such as NORAD, United States Air Force Academy, The National Renewable Energy Laboratory, The U.S. Geological Survey. 

The biggest employment place in Colorado is The Denver International Airport, Denver Health, University of Colorado, Children’s Hospital Colorado, University of Colorado-Boulder, Lockheed Martin Space Systems, Colorado State University, Western Union, and many more. In 2010, Colorado was ranked as 3rd best state to do great business.  

The tourism sector, logistics, mining, aerospace, and manufacturing industry is also one of the flourishing business sectors in Colorado. The state has stable economic growth making it desirable among youth to come here and settle here. The unemployment rate of the state is about 5.4 %. Colorado also boasts a flat income rate of 4.63% and one of the lowest sales taxes in the country at 2.9%; Colorado’s Gross Domestic Product (GPD) in 2016 was $320 billion.

Do you like living in Colorado? Yes, Colorado charges low taxes compared to rates in other states in America. According to SmartAsset, Colorado has “low property taxes and a flat income tax rate of 4.63 percent.” In 2017, the average per capita income was $3,7000 per annum. In Colorado, the average annual household income is about $ 70,000. 

Colorado offers a corporate tax rate of less than 5% and the lowest sales tax. Colorado’s property tax bills are cheaper to 0.55%, and income tax is4.63%. A tax survey from ATTOM Data Solution states that Colorado has the “third-lowest effective property tax rate of any state, only 0.52 percent versus 1.16 percent nationally.” One of the greatest benefits of living in Colorado is that citizens can invest more money which will bring development. 

A study by WalletHub shows that property taxes in Colorado are the most affordable and the lowest. The state also allows retirees a tax exemption for retirement income. Hence, we can state that the Colorado government-imposed tax which is affordable. But remember that there are pros and cons of living in Colorado and every individual has their own expenses and investment no matter where he lives or resides. 

4. Landscape and beautiful scenery

Is it worth living in Colorado? With Colorado’smountainous landscape, stunning blue lakes, the lush forest around Rocky Mountain to majestic scenery, Colorado is indeed a beautiful place to live in. You will get access to incredibly beautiful nature; in 2015, I first went to Colorado with my father to visit his friend in the city of Colorado Springs. I was awestruck seeing the beauty of Colorado Springs; little did I know that the whole state is a dreamland.

Beauty is the first thing that attracts people to Colorado. The stunning vistas of Maroon Bells in the time of falls are a sight for sore eyes. The color of aspen trees looks so beautiful than you can imagine. If you want to be near mountains then living with the communities like Silverthorne or Vail is perfect.

An alpine lake in the east is the best place to relax and enjoy the soothing air. You can head to the west to explore the diverse wildlife and national parks. Here is the list of regrets moving to Colorado – Now, it’s time to turn the tables and know the other side of Colorado. 

1. The explosion of population growth

Colorado has touched an all-time high population of more than 6 million residents, which means more than 1.6 million people settled in the last 20 years. This has turned the state into a chaotic market. Overcrowding and overpopulation have ruined this state and the crowd has exploited the beauty of Colorado. 

The biggest cons of living in Colorado Springs is that over the last six decades there is a huge growth of population in Colorado Spring. This place is considered one of the best places to live in the United States. Colorado is home to 498,879 people. It is the 21st most populated state in the United State; and the only beautiful mountain state. 

2. The atmosphere is extremely dry

The air in Colorado is clean but extremely dry. Because of its elevation, you have to drink enough water to prevent dehydration. You have to apply moisturizer on your skin again and again to prevent skin bleeding. Elevation sickness, nose bleeds, and sore throats can be your daily reasons for you to visit a doctor. 

You will be amazed to see ice melts on the top of the Rocky Mountains and the cold crisp atmosphere. It takes a few minutes to dry your wet towel because the air in Colorado is that dry. Dryness in Colorado is a serious problem and you have to keep yourself hydrated to prevent fainting.

3. The negative impact of urbanization: 

Everyone is driving their own car – residents, and tourists. The small place has become home to many people. Denver and Colorado Spring are full and it is hard to walk on the streets. During the rush hours, it is so difficult to walk on the streets. You can say, employment is resulting in plenty of traffic in Colorado.

• Discrimination in Colorado exists
• Not a place for sea lovers
• Newcomers are not always treated with respect by the locals
• Traffic in Colorado is bad 

Cost to Living in Colorado

There are advantages and disadvantages of living in Colorado. If you don’t earn well then Colorado is not your place. I know it sounds bad, but the truth has to be told. When I came to Colorado to settle down, John helped me out or I would have to pack my bags and return. Daily expenses, such as fuel and groceries cost more than other states in the country. 

In restaurants, every item is 50% markup, if you research well and choose affordable places then you can manage these above costs to an extent. According to Zillow, in 2018, the median sale price of homes in Colorado was around $359,800. I can guarantee the price has risen over years, and the survey states that the average annual home price growth is about 7-9%.

According to PayScale, the cost of living in Denver is 12% higher than the national average. There are pros and cons of living in Denver, Colorado. Though Denver is the capital but the most expensive place to live in. Colorado Springs has a 6% lower cost of living than the US average. The apartment rentals in Colorado are almost 30% higher than the national average. Here is a general idea about the income and expense (annually) how the cost of living looks like in Colorado – 

• Food – $3,800
• Medical – $2,810
• Transportation – $4,800
• Medium rent in Denver (1 bedroom apartment) – $1,748
• Medium rent in Colorado Spring (1 bedroom apartment) – $1500 
• Medium income in Colorado – $72,350       

The house has a great impact on the budget. You have to choose a place which is affordable as well as safe for you. Safety is the most precious thing and should be your utmost point to look forward to choosing a place. The crime rate in Colorado is below average and makes it one of the best places to live in. 

The best neighborhoods in Colorado are – Cherry Creek, Boulder, Holly Hills, and Louisville. The worst neighborhoods in Colorado are – Sterling, Greeley, Pagosa Spring, and Pueblo. 

What is Life in Colorado Like?

When you seek advice from me, I’ll give you the perspective and some great valuable information to you before you decide to move to Colorado. I’ve compiled a list of things to know before moving to Colorado. 

1. The Altitude is high

Colorado is 10,000 feet above sea level and its altitude can create a problem for you if you’re comfortable living at lower altitudes. Higher altitude means there will be less oxygen in the air and your body can function harder, if you try to force your body then you can face headaches and nausea. 

The sun is stronger, so sunscreen is a must when you step out of the house. But, you don’t have to worry because our bodies always adjust to the new situation.

2. Craft Beer is a reality

There are an endless number of brewhouses around Colorado and they supply varied types of craft beer for your taste buds. One of the greatest advantages of living in Colorado is you can taste from simple to experimental beers to many local beers which taste delicious. Every year Denver hosts the Great American Beer Festival, and that is the best time for beer lovers. 

3. Marijuana is normal

If you’re moving to Colorado then buying and selling marijuana is a normal and common thing. Although it depends on the city you’re staying in but no matter where you’re, weed is legalized in Colorado. Unlike in other states of America, here you will find it at every house and it’s not taboo. Remember, Colorado Springs and some other cities don’t allow the retail sale of marijuana. 

4. Skiing destination

I agree there are a range of pros and cons of moving to Colorado but can you argue that Colorado is considered the finest skiing destination in the world? I know you can’t because currently, it has 26 active ski resorts. Granby Ranch Ski Area is a great place to learn skiing; you can also consider Aspen and Vail. Apart from ski resorts, you will find here plenty of things to do in Colorado.

5. Low water supply

Due to the topography water stays in the mountains (ice melts) but most of the population lives at a lower elevation so water has to be brought from the mountains. With upgraded technology, Colorado is working hard to move water from atop mountains to down.

The beautiful valleys with wildflowers, flowing rivers, and waterfalls make Colorado one of the best places to live. It has many small towns and big cities which are home to a lot of people.
